Review: Ms. Marvel #29

July 27th, 2008 Comments off

I haven’t really been following this title, and now I’m very, very sorry. I also haven’t been following every tie-in with this event, but I’ve been following some of them and this is one of the few issues that has been entirely in the present. This is what I’ve been looking for in the narrative. Battles against overwhelming odds, chase scenes, and a surprise on the last page to get you ready for the next issue. What more can you ask for?

Brian Reed tells the tale of what happens to Ms. Marvel as one of the only heroes fighting the Skrulls in New York. I don’t know where all the other heroes in the Marvel U are, but I can tell you where the Skrulls are. Well, actually I can’t because they seem to be popping up everywhere, but there are a boatload of them in this issue and Mr. Reed makes it clear that they don’t like Ms. Marvel, or her resistance to their invasion, very much.

Doing a fine job on art, we’ve got Adriana Melo on pencils, Mariah Benes on inks, and Paulo Siqueira on pages 11 – 16. They convey the scale of the invasion and the overwhelming forces the heroes face beautifully. Now, I generally try to keep my reviews on the positive side but I have to interject here that while the art is well done, it doesn’t really do anything for me. These are professional comic book artists who have achieved mastery of their art form, so I don’t want to take away from that, but I didn’t feel that this was the best this book could have or should have looked. That said, the story does move along well and is one of the best tie-ins I’ve read so far.

Recommended for anyone following Secret Invasion.

Infiltration Success: Secret Invasion Tie-Ins Sellout

May 6th, 2008 Comments off

April saw Secret Invasion begin its takeover of the Marvel Universe as the first issue was met with an almost instant sellout and was subsequently rushed back to press for a second printing. As the invasion spreads throughout other Marvel titles, the sellouts continue!

Secret Invasion tie-ins Mighty Avengers #12, New Avengers #40 and Ms. Marvel #26 have sold out at Diamond. Marvel has no plans on going back to press at this time.

These sellouts follow the success of the Secret Invasion: Infiltration issues Captain Marvel #3-5 and Ms. Marvel #25, which also racked up sellouts and a must-have collection of their own.

As Secret Invasion #2 hits stores May 7th, be sure to pick up the other May Secret Invasion tie-ins in Mighty Avengers #13 and #14, New Avengers #41, Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four #1, Captain Britain and MI13 #1, Incredible Hercules #117 and Ms. Marvel #27.

Daredevil #106: Ed Brubaker continues to write a Matt Murdock that you feel for. How do you move on with your life when everything you smell reminds you of the woman you can’t see? It’s hard for people without enhanced senses. For Matt, it’s even harder to stay sane. Guest artist Paul Azaceta beautifully illustrates Brubaker’s story of three of Matt’s friends coping with his pain.

X-Men: First Class #10: Jeff Parker loves me. Okay, I’m sure he doesn’t. And until he posted this entry on his site, he most likely never even thought about me. But that’s okay. Because this issue tells the tale of a Cyclops solo adventure. Want to know why Cyclops is the leader? Reading this story will help in unerstanding the character’s origins. Craig Rousseau does an admirable job filling in for Roger Cruz this month.

Wolverine: First Class #1: Now this is a nice first issue. For someone like myself whose been an X-Men fan for a long time and remembers when Kitty joined the team (even if I wasn’t an active reader at the time, joining the faithful at the end of the Dave Cockrum run just prior to Paul Smith starting), this is a look ‘between panels’ at the beginning of the friendship she shares with Logan. And if you’re not familiar with Kitty Pryde and want to know why she would be teamed up with Wolverine, Fred Van Lente and Andrea Di Vito do an amazing job of answering that question, starting with this issue. You can’t go wrong with this one.

Ms. Marvel #25: SKRULLS!!

Ultimate Human #3: This has been a gorgeous story. Cary Nord and Dave Stewart do wonders bringing Warren Ellis‘ script to life. They make a great team. The only nitpick I have is the majority of this issue told the origin of the Leader. Problem is, the origin story takes place in the past and after being in the present day for the first two issues, it was a little jarring being thrown into what’s basically a flashback, cold, and at the beginning of the issue. But I guess I’m a little old-school where we would usually have the villain exclaim his triumph over our hero or heroes and we’d get the origin in a handful of panels. It still works here, don’t get me wrong. And if that’s the only thing I can bitch about, then really, this story’s firing on all cylinders.
